CARLSTADT, N.J. – Color development and trend specialist Pantone has revealed its 2021 Color of the Year as two contrasting tones aimed to show how different colors can come together for creative design solutions in and outside the home.

The colors are Ultimate Gray (Pantone 17-5104) and a bright yellow tone called Illuminating (Pantone 13-0647).

As with previous selections, these aim to give design direction in fashion, home furnishings and industrial design. Company color experts choose these tones based on inspirations from travel, art, fashion, and even film and entertainment.

“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”
