VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Article, a digitally native furniture e-tailer, is moving to create original products that are fully designed by the company and licensed to manufacturers to efficiently produce, while still protecting its intellectual property.
The company plans to have half of all the new products introduced to its catalog be original equipment manufacturer designs by the end of the second quarter of 2021.
“I’ve been with the company since the beginning of 2020, and we are now moving all of our designs in house,” said Wendy Youds, Article vice president of product and merchandising. “This ensures that we offer the best value to the customer through the process.”
Youds said over the past year, Article has diversified the number of manufacturers it works with and invested in building out its design capabilities. The company has added nine new product and industrial designers as well as product developers and it is also now working with freelance designers for the first time.
“The team is developing exclusive designs and working with our manufacturing partners to curate an original catalog of beautiful modern furniture,” Youds added. “We’re also in the process of designing and developing exclusive raw materials for Article products, including upholstery and leather.”
The company said it will maintain its commitment to delivering its product consistently and on time.
Since Article doesn’t participate in physical trade shows, it plans to develop online catalogs and focus on bringing in new trends and insights from vendors.
“We will now be able to design products that are exclusive and maintain our brand’s unique elements,” Youds said. “We currently have two OEM collections, Linear and Madera, which are selling well.”
Article has always worked with manufacturers all over the world to offer the highest-quality products, according to the company, and that won’t change. But, the team is currently having discussions about the best way to properly expand the company’s manufacturing base moving forward.
