ANSTERDAM – AkzoNobel’s purchase of Spain-based Stahl Performance Powder Coatings is expected to help boost its powder-coating finishing capabilities in the wood and metal furniture segment, offering retailers and consumers alike more finishing options in the future.

The company announced earlier this month that it had completed the purchase for the performance powder coatings and its range of heat sensitive substrates. It did not reveal the purchase price or other terms of the acquisition.

“The deal gives the company accelerated access to unique low-curing technology that will open exciting new market opportunities,” the company said in the announcement.

It also noted that the commercially ready technology is the “only one of its kind in the powder-coatings industry,” including both UV and thermally curing powders that will allow the company to penetrate new markets based on applying powder to “temperature sensitive” substrates such as MDF, plywood, thermoplastics and composites.

“This is a great acquisition, which will enable us to build on our global leadership position by entering emerging market spaces that have major potential,” said Daniel Vlad, powder coatings director at AkzoNobel.

“Powder on wood is a rapidly growing area within the coatings industry as customers look to embrace the sustainability benefits that powder has to offer,” he added. “The acquired technology is mainly focused on the furniture, architectural and industrial markets. … Adding this know-how to our existing expertise will open up a broad range of process applications and enable us to deliver innovative new surface solutions. We’re looking to lead the way in emerging powder markets and further establish ourselves as a technology frontrunner as our portfolio continues to expand.”

In a related announcement, the company said it was investing 20 million euro to increase capacity in its Como, Italy, plant. This investment will primarily boost powder coatings for the automotive sector. In addition to using advanced equipment and technology to deliver higher productivity rates and gains in efficiency, the expanded operation in Como will use recycled energy to reduce energy consumption.
